Thank you for your letter of 17 July 2006 seeking Government funding for the renovation and refurbishment of Belmore Sports Ground.

Primary responsibility for the development of community infrastructure and sporting facilities rests with State, Territory and local governments. Unfortunately, there are no ongoing funding programs within the sport portfolio that could support the upgrade of Belmore Sports Ground.

From time to time the Australian Government has endeavoured to assist with funding for sporting facilities and projects, including through a number of commitments announced in the “Building Australian Communities Through Sport” election policy in the context of the 2004 Federal election. Most recently, funding was provided for an upgrade of Toyota Park, and construction of a National Sports Museum at the MCG and the South Australian State Aquatic Centre.

An option the Bulldogs Rugby League Football Club may wish to consider in relation to attracting funding for this project is the use of the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF). The ASF provides for tax deductible corporate and community donations towards specific projects when they are registered with the Foundation. Tax deductibility of donations provides for an attractive alternative to sponsorship for companies and encourages donations from individuals in the community.
